General Motors

General Motors is a U.S. automaker currently comprised of four core brands (Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC) after emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in July 2009. GM also included Hummer, Saab, Pontiac and Saturn prior to entering bankruptcy, though each of these brands are in the stages of either being sold or phased out. Founded in September 1908 by William C. Durant, GM was the largest automaker in the world for most of the 20th century, though has slipped to No. 2 behind Toyota in recent years.
